September 1988. A cyclist glides past the Banff Cafe — established 1926, charcoal broiled steaks, licensed restaurant — while early afternoon traffic idles along the main street. Souvenir shops and sporting goods stores line the block. And behind it all, rising impossibly above the rooftops, the jagged snow capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies stretch across the sky like something out of a painting.

This is small town mountain life at its most unhurried and most beautiful.

The Banff Cafe is gone now — another beloved local institution lost to time. But here it is, preserved in a vintage slide from September 1988, exactly as it was on one perfectly ordinary afternoon that turned out to be anything but.

Some places deserve to be remembered. This is one of them.

As with all Retrospect Studio Art prints, this image originates from a real vintage slide — and real vintage slides have lived a life. You may notice the occasional worn edge, subtle nick, or faint mark in the film. We think that's exactly as it should be. These small imperfections are the fingerprints of time, proof that this image existed long before it found its way to your wall. They are not flaws — they are part of the story.
